After the penalty drama of last week, the girls in green were eager to make their mark in this week’s match against the Lancot Lionesses. The game started with high energy, and from the first whistle, Esme showed determination with an early run, only to be met by a solid defensive line. The Wildcats maintained strong pressure, with Crouchy and Evie showing great defensive teamwork.
Indie was relentless, weaving through defenders with her impressive footwork, while Crouchy consistently cleared any potential danger. Aimee drove the ball down the wing but was just off target with a wide strike. As the first quarter progressed, the combination of Hollie and Eden driving down paid off, with Eden taking the opportunity to set up Indie, who slotted the ball in for a 1-0 lead.
The Lancot Lionesses fought back, but the Wildcats’ defense, led by Crouchy, Evie, and Maya, stood firm. Hollie was fearless in her attacks, nearly scoring from a bending corner taken by Crouchy. Eden showcased her skill, taking on three defenders single-handedly, but the Wildcats couldn’t extend their lead before halftime.
The second half saw more incredible work from the Wildcats’ defense. Liv, the goalkeeper, made several crucial saves, keeping the Lancot side at bay. Maya and Lily worked together to build attacks, while Esme continued to be a threat on the wing. However, despite their efforts, the Lancot Lionesses equalised, bringing the score to 1-1, with Liv narrowly missing a reach for the ball.
The final quarter was tense, with both teams pushing hard. Indie and Eden tried to break through the opposition’s thick defense, while Liv remained a wall in goal, making crucial saves. Maya and Crouchy ensured that any Lancot attacks were cleared, keeping the Wildcats in the game. Unfortunately, despite numerous chances, the Wildcats couldn’t find the back of the net, and the match ended 1-1, taking the cup game to penalties.
In the penalty shootout, the tension was palpable. Eden’s shot was saved, while Lancot’s attempt hit the crossbar. Hollie’s shot was also saved, Goalie Liv put in a shift making impressive saves for the Wildcats, and despite a strong effort, Aimee and Lily’s shots went wide. Next up, Crouchy who punted her shot straight into the keeper’s arms, followed by another perfect save from Liv, lastly Esme’s attempt was unfortunately saved and, in the end, Lancot clinched the win with a nutmeg goal, taking the shootout 2-1.
The Galaxy Wildcats Lionesses fought hard until the final whistle and should be proud of their efforts. Though the match ended in a 1-2 loss on penalties, the team’s determination and resilience shone through. They will be looking to bounce back at the next opportunity.
Captain Crouchy’s defensive performance landed her Player of the Match! Another brilliant game to watch, with the Greens growing in skill and confidence week after week.
